Is there anything better than seeing a well used planner like this? I thought not. Love the little quirks - one or two bits of detail coupled with a lot of text... me gusta!

a minimalist desk, part II

Last year, I blogged about decluttering and minimalism and this little project of mine has been going well. I threw a lot of things out and also gave a lot of things to charity in December and January, and this process is still going on.

Anyway, in that aforementioned blog post, I showed a picture of my desk. I have since invested (if you can call it that - it is just a basic table from Ikea!) in a new desk as that one was breaking down and the colour was chipping off, etc. And with this new 'investment', I will show you how this new desk looks, how I have organised it and also how it will work for me when I start studying once again in September.

So firstly, a picture of the desk:

On my desk, I have my laptop, a desk lamp (not shown), a Martha Stewart x Avery StackFit drawer, a box of tissues, a pot of pens (just a Muji Acrylic Pen Pot) and desk tidy (from WH Smith).

In the Martha Stewart x Avery drawer, I have separated it into compartments using boxes from past orders of high street jewellery from ASOS (these turned out to be the ideal size) and also boxes or containers from other various things. Currently, it is quite empty as I am still steadily unpacking my stationery into various places!

On the top of these drawers, I put important papers that I would need within the next week or two. These include forms that need filling in, card statements that need filing away at the next opportunity or even a letter that needs posting.

Next, the desk tidy. This is useful for putting my journal, my Slimline Deco (which is currently holding my food diary) and a booklet that will be helpful in the next few months.

It also holds a wad of sticky notes, pens and other useful implements such as rulers, scissors, etc.

Finally, my pen pot!

I love that it is clear and round. I've seen square acrylic ones but I just feel that the square shape isn't as pretty as a round shape. The fact that it is clear means that it is easy to find the colour pen that I want to use. In the past, I used a tin (that I decorated with washi tape) but finding the colour pen I wanted was time consuming, and sometimes quite frustrating and so that is why I much prefer this pen pot.

The view from the bottom of the pen pot.
I have decorated it with some washi tape:

I just used simple colours (a pink and white stripe, gold and silver) to decorate it. However, if I feel I prefer it without this decoration, the good thing about washi tape is that I can just remove it and re-use it in another way.

With this desk, I love how big it is. It is big enough for everything I need, and when I come to study, this will prove very, very useful. There is plenty of space for two or three textbooks, a notepad and my laptop which may be necessary for online research. As this desk is where the studying will take place, I will need to make an effort to ensure that it stays as minimalistic as possible, so as to remove any potential distractions. This may include putting my laptop into a drawer if necessary as I have a small chest of drawers under the table at the moment!

I am thinking of moving the StackFit drawer to my bookcase but for now, I am content with how my desk looks so it will stay put.

my week #46

Another week down, only around 26 weeks or so before I start university (again!). I really want to do a countdown a la Imy's World, but I have yet to firm the university and course on UCAS yet. So, until I firm it (which will probably in mid-April sometime), I will have to sit tight and contain the excitement that is currently occupying my mind!

I have been trying to find temporary employment within a healthcare setting, but it has all been in vain as temporary healthcare jobs are few and far between so I may have to opt for a job in a different sector in order to tide me over until September.

Anyway, enough rambling. Here is my week :)

I'm trying to become a bit more minimalistic in how journal-like I have been keeping my diary pages but I also need colour and cute little things. That all sounds like a paradox, I know!

How has your week been?

keeping creative diary pages

As you probably know, I like to keep my diary colourful but functional and I have noticed that quite a few others seem to share this mindset. I know that others prefer to keep their diary simple without all the frills others would add, but I guess that's down to personal taste and preference. For me, however, I would like to look back at a certain year's worth of diary inserts and leaf through it as if it were a mini-journal too.

Anyway, I thought I would do a post on how I decorate my diary sheets and also the inspiration behind some of the ways I use colour and stickers to maintain a functional planner, but also keep my inserts as a sort-of 'mini-journal'.

Firstly, sticky notes. I find these very useful for when a large chunk of information has to be highlighted. Often, I use them for lists (such as a shopping list) or for other bits of important information (such as train times).

I find that using a sticky note enables this chunk of text to jump out easily but it also ensures that there is a way to 'separate' that information from other bits of my daily planning. Also, sticky notes can look pretty too!

Next, colour! Colour is fantastic to ensure the continual use of my planner. This might not be the case for everyone, but it definitely is for me. I've always enjoyed being creative (I first used Photoshop when I was fourteen!) and I guess that never went away.

There are various ways to use colour - by using different colours to write different things, highlighting, underlining, drawing shapes, etc.

Now, onto stickers. I use a variety - from plain to animal faces to Rilakkuma ones. I use them to highlight something important, or just to decorate the pages - there are many reasons as to why I use them. They also add colour which is a big thing for me. In school, I was a very visual learner and colour helped, and I guess that transferred over to my day-to-day planning too.

I like to try and use stickers in a creative way too - as you can see below.

I used Martha Stewart x Avery teardrop stickers and cut each in half and made a pattern with them. I loved how the green and the blue complemented each other and I used this as a way to keep track of TV shows I was watching instead of the usual just-write-it-on-plainly method!

Another thing I use is washi tape to highlight things. Although I mentioned the use of highlighters earlier, I personally prefer to use washi tape as I didn't like how highlighters bled on the Filofax paper. However, now that I am in Smythson inserts, this is less of an issue but I've always found highlighters to be quite messy and I can't say I am a big fan of them in my planner.

I highlight various things - if a day is boring, I might highlight a TV show to watch, or if an important event was to occur, that might be highlighted too. I like using washi tape on washi tape too:

Finally, I like to mix up the 'font' I use for things. This adds to the journalling aspect and I like using 'bubble' writing, or very thin writing to add that extra bit of 'art' to my pages.

One last thing (I promise this is the last one!) is that sometimes, I add in some illustration of some kind to denote an event. An example of this is on a day when it snowed!

I rarely illustrate properly though, and prefer to use my Rilakkuma stamp set instead (not only are they cuter, they are also a quick and easy way to decorate my pages). Alternatively, if I find something cute in a magazine, in a department store (such as a perfume card), I would stick that on to decorate a boring day. Sometimes, I even stick train tickets on a day that I travelled somewhere interesting too.

I hope you've enjoyed a brief glimpse into how and why I decorate my diary pages. If you still hadn't figured it out, it's because:

- colour and creativity helps me remember things and also keeps me committed to my daily planning

and because:

- I like to look back on my diary pages as if I am reading an old journal I have kept.

How do you like to keep your planner?
